Higher Car Ferry |
|
Service
|
During extremely
severe NW squalls the floating bridge Higher Ferry at Dartmouth broke free
from |
|
her guiding
cables and drifted down the River Dart. She had almost a full load of cars
with some 42 |
|
passengers.
Local craft and Torbay lifeboat all tasked. The ferry, with assistance from
the Harbour |
|
authority,
managed to pick up a buoy amongst the moorings on the Kingswear side of the
river |
|
preventing
further drift. The lifeboat stood by and transferred approximately half of
the passengers to |
|
shore. Work is
in hand to recover the cars aboard using the tug operated lower car ferry. |
|
Additional
Notes |
All
passengers taken to the Dart Marina Hotel whilst their cars are recovered. |
