Location of Livermead, Torquay

Service Launched in response to a May Day call from Yacht Patrise identified as being on a bearing of

330 degrees from Berry Head. ALB & ILB both tasked to search the line of the bearing as

quickly as possible. Subsequently position established as 5 knot marker line off Livermead. ILB

recovered vessel to Torquay Harbour. ALB stood down.

Additional Notes Reason for May Day thought to be engine failure.

Location of

Service Having assisted Salcombe put 'Emma Jane' alongside (previous shout) ALB tasked to check for

missing kayaks outside Salcombe Estuary.

Kayaks located between Prawle Point and Salcombe all OK. ALB headed back to Brixham

without further incident.

Additional Notes ALB at sea for 10 hours today - it started as a simple exercise morning.

Location of 49 40.60N 003 37.30W    (See Chartlet)

Service On return leg from the previous shout fishing vessel 'Emma Jane' with 7 people on board

issued a May Day due to a fire in her engine room. ALB immediately diverted to her assistance.

Helo RWB also retasked at 09:46 after dropping casualty at Torbay Hospital. May Day reduced to

Pan Pan when fire extinguished by crew. Salcombe also launched. 'Emma Jane' returned

under tow by Torbay then tow transferred to Salcombe once close in. Both lifeboats assisted her

alongside. Torbay ALB then retasked - see next shout.

Service Launched to support medical evacuation of a person suffering heart problems on the day

angling vessel 'Shandy III'. Helo RWB also tasked from Portland arriving on scene at 09:20 and

took the casualty to Torbay Hospital landing at approx 09:35. ALB released at 0930. On return

leg ALB retasked

Location of Sharkham Point area

Service Two or three reports from people around Brixham and Berry Head Quarry indicated sighting of

white or red flares. HM Coastguards investigated the initial reports and ALB subsequently

tasked to search shore line and out to sea. Nothing found and search terminated at 23:47hrs.

Additional Notes One report suggested a hot air balloon was in the area.

Service The fishing vessel 'Patricia' was disabled with a flooded engine room. ALB tasked to her

assistance and returned her under tow to Brixham. Casualty approximately 12 miles ENE of

Brixham Breakwater.

Location of South Side Roundham Head

Service A member of the public observed what appeared to be people caught by the rising tide to the

south of Roundham Head. Sea conditions were moderate to rough with an Easterly wind force

4/5. HM Coastguards investigating the report believed there to be two people cut off and at risk.

ALB and Rescue 169 from Chivenor tasked. The location was not visible from the cliff top only at

a distance. After extensive search by the ALB and R169 and on shore investigation nothing was

found. The search was stood down at 18:39.

Service Launched to a 16ft fishing boat with two people on board disabled by a fouled propeller and

drifting between Thatcher Rock and Orestone. Taken in tow and returned to Torquay Harbour.

Service Passenger fishing vessel 'Delora' from Torquay with seven people on board suffered a gearbox

failure 15 miles ESE of Start Point. ALB tasked to her assistance and returned her under tow to

Torquay where she was met and taken into Torquay Marina.

Service ALB launched to evacuate the skipper of a Brixham day fishing boat who had crushed a finger.

Crew paramedic boarded fishing vessel and assisted in transfer to ALB. Boat owner went with

the ALB and transferred to the fishing vessel to return her to Brixham. Injured Skipper landed at

Kingswear where they were met by a waiting ambulance for transfer to Torbay Hospital.

Service The fast fishing vessel 'Lady Victoria' reported an unoccupied canoe in Lyme Bay (approx 16

miles East of Berry Head). Torbay ALB tasked together with Helo Rescue 'VA' to search area

where canoe observed. Search patterns developed in failing light - nothing found and search

stood down at 19:35.

Additional Notes Weather conditions were calm for good search conditions.

Location of Paignton Harbour area

Service Launched to assist in a large search for a missing teenager thought to be in the area of

Paignton Harbour. ALB searched off shore between Paignton Pier and Goodrington until search

stood down at 21:48.

Additional Notes Teenager located in Paignton by a patrol car. Helicopter Rescue 169 (Chivenor) and HM

Coastguards all involved.

Service Launched to assist in the search for a sinking speed boat (See ILB Shout 3). Casualties

recovered at the time of this launch but ALB continued to examine and recover the remains of

the speed boat. Fisheries Vessel Drumbeat and her RIB also gave assistance. Hull taken in to

Torquay Harbour by the lifeboat. Various belongings collected by Drumbeat.

Location of 300 yards of the Breakwater end

Service A local Brixham Beam Trawler lost all auxiliary power shortly after leaving harbour. Her fishing

gear was partly deployed. In view of her proximity to Brixham Breakwater the ALB was tasked to

her assistance. It took one hour to tow her approx one mile back to the fish quay!

Additional Notes HM Coastguard shore team met them at the Fish Quay

Location of Berry Head area

Service Launched to do a shore line search around Berry Head and the adjacent coastline following

reports of a possible missing person. The search area was extended in terrible weather

conditions until 17:28. Shore teams continued into the early evening with no result.

Additional Notes Police, HM Coastguard teams and helo WB all tasked as personal items located near the light

house.

Service Launched to meet a 17000 ton general cargo vessel on passage to evacuate an injured

crewman. The crewman had suffered a dislocated elbow, He was transferred to the lifeboat and

onwards to Haldon Pier, Torquay where they were met by an ambulance. The crewman was

taken to Torbay Hospital. A&E Department

Additional Notes The ship anchored close to Torbay awaiting the outcome at Torbay Hospital

Location of 50 22N 003 28W

Service Launched to asses a French fisherman who had suffered a head injury. Fishing vessel 2 miles

south of Berry Head and making way to Brixham. Crew Paramedic put on board. Decision to

keep the casualty onboard the vessel as any transfer could make the situation worse. Vessel

escorted to Brixham where they were met by Ambulance. Crewman transferred to Torbay

Hospital.

Location of 7 miles south of Start Point

Service Following the sighting of red flares by ships South of Start Point the HM Coastguard launched a

major search including all shipping in the area, Helicopter, Torbay and Salcombe lifeboats. A

Life raft was sighted and four people recovered. Established one was still missing. Life Jacket

spotted by another vessel. Salcombe located and recovered the body of the missing yachtsman.

Casualties airlifted to Derriford Hospital where two were identified as suffering from

Hypothermia. Torbay lifeboat located the capsized yacht which had apparently lost its keel.

Attempts to return the hull to Salcombe by Torbay lifeboat under tow were abandoned following

tow rope breakages as the yacht gradually took on water..

Additional Notes The yacht apparently capsized almost instantly. One of the crew had to dive under the upturned

hull to free the life raft. See Pictures on Home Page

Service On return from exercise ALB tasked to assist in locating a missing dog. Dog found on the waters edge  

at the bottom of the cliffs. Y Boat deployed and dog recovered without further incident and re-united

with its owners Owners very happy!.

Additional Notes HM Coastguard teams also assisted.
