Location of Casualty SE of Sharkham Point

Service Holiday makers at the Riviera Camp Site, Brixham reported smoke from a fishing vesel approx 0.75

miles SE of Sharkham Point. Coastguards, AWB and Pilot Boat tasked. The 8.5m stern Trawler 'Les

Marcenaires' was found seriously burning and the skipper had left the vessel in a life raft. He was

picked up by the pilot boat and the AWB Paramedic transferred to check him over. He was taken

ashore to an awaiting ambulance. AWB stood by vessel and attempted to extinguish the fire but she

continued to burn before eventually sinking.

Additional Notes Sea conditions were calm.

Location of Casualty River Dart Castles

Service Launched to a twenty foot single handed yacht in the entrance to the River Dart and reportedly

sinking. Dart Harbour staff and others gave assistance and AWB stood down as she rounded Berry

Head.

Location of Casualty Brixham Harbour

Service The fishing vessel 'Peace and Plenty' moored within Brixham Harbour reported water above the

engine and in danger of sinking. AWB pump requested to assist. AWB went to her assistance and

established the emergency pump which returned the vessel to a stable and safe condition.

Additional Notes The Coxswain and Crew consider the vessel would have sunk within a minute of the time they

arrived had the pump not been established. Fire Brigade also stood by

Location of Casualty Entrance to Torquay harbour

Service As with the ILB the AWB was preparing for the annual SAR Demo due to start at 16:05 when she

was tasked to a capsized Catamaran at Torquay. People taken off by others and ILB requested to give

assistance but she found a sinking speed boat on route and diverted (ILB 61). Catamaran taken in

tow to Torquay Harbour and Oscar 4 gave assistance to people taken off.

Additional Notes The SAR Demo was delayed until shortly after 17:00 when the AB, ILB and Oscar 4 returned to

Breakwater Beach.

Location of Casualty 1.5 miles off Goodrington

Service An 8 metre cruiser caught fire approx 1.5 miles off Goodrington Beach. AWB tasked and other vessels

sent to their assistance. Crew put fire out and were taken off the vessel by others. Boat made safe

by AWB Crew and towed to Torquay.

Additional Notes Vessel raised the alarm by mobile phone - had they used Marine Radio facilities assistance would

have been almost immediate.

Location of Casualty Scabbacombe

Service Whilst returning from a Search and Rescue Demonstration at Teignmouth the AWB was tasked to

locate a constant carrier on Channel 16. Using the Direction Finding system the transmission was

located to a vessel at Scabbacombe. Faulty equipment switched off and carrier cleared.

Location of Casualty Cod Rocks

Service The dive boat 'Samuel Irvine' with ten divers on board apparently suffered a gearbox failure near

the Cod Rocks south of Berry Head. The ALB was tasked and took her under tow to Dartmouth.

Additional Notes It was the RN Britannia Naval College, Dartmouth 100 year celebrations with much overflying by

naval aircraft!

Location of Casualty 50 26.38W 003 26.29W

Service The 37ft power cruiser 'Baleric Discovery' suffered one engine failure and steering problems approx

3 miles NE of Berry Head. Wind strengths of around SW7 were occurring and the vessel was unable

to maintain headway into the rough seas. ALB tasked to her assistance. The sea conditions made

transfer of a crew member difficult and transfer was carried out via the RIB Oscar 4. A tow was

established and the vessel returned to Brixham.

Additional Notes The vessel is understood to be on passage from Chichester to Torbay

Service The 38ft Dutch Yacht 'Alhena' became becalmed in fog and whilst on her engine became caught up in

fishing net. Visibility in Lyme Bay 50 metres or less. The yacht is on the main shipping route to and

from Torbay Pilot station. ALB tasked to her assistance.

Additional Notes Fishing Vessel 'Our Zoe Ann' standing by until lifeboat arrives on scene. Visibility 50 metres or less.

Service A member of the public reported 'Cries' for Help somewhere off Holicombe Headland. ILB and ALB

tasked to investigate. Clothes found on the beach and a dinghy located with two adults on board. No

help required. Lifeboats returned to station.

Location of Casualty Redcove/Warren Point/Dancing Beggars

Service Holiday makers observed a person apparently climbing up and slipping back down cliffs near Warren

Point, Stoke Flemming (South of Dartmouth). At dusk they reported the person slipped down the cliffs

and alerted the Coastguard. Cliff teams unable to locate due to height and sheer of cliffs. Lifeboat

assistance requested to search from the sea. No one located and search stood down at 00:30.

Location of Casualty Princess Pier

Service The pleasure boat 'Solent Princess' observed a swimmer apparently hanging on to a pillar on the

Princess Pier, Torquay. The AWB was diverted from exercise to investigate. On approach the

swimmer climbed a rope and made off. AWB returned to exercise - swimmer checked out by HM

Coastguard shore team.

Location of Casualty 4 miles East of Hopes Nose

Service Following a report from the Dive Boat Sirus of a diver failing to surface the AWB was tasked to join

what became a multi-unit search for the missing diver. The search was unsuccessful and terminated

at darkness. Diver last seen falling from a decompression stop to the sea bed.

Additional Notes Two other divers taken by Helicopter to Plymouth for Decompression treatment.

Service Launched to carry out a medivac of a crewman suffering suspected appendicitis. Transferred from

'RFA Fort George' to the lifeboat and onward to Haldon Pier, Torquay to an awaiting ambulance.

Crewman taken to Torbay Hospital.
